Toews asking people to be vigilant when it comes to fires

May 18, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Outgoing Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Travis Toews is asking people to be very careful not to start fires in these dry conditions.

Toews says he has been told by fire officials that a lot of fires are starting from brush piles that were burned over winter.

“We had a fire like this on our ranch. A brush pile that was lit (in) January, February and it still had a hot spot and that actually created a fire on our ranch, which we put out ourselves.”

“It’s just vigilance around those kinds of things, because of the extreme dry.”

Toews says he is amazed by how many homes firefighters have saved since the wildfires started.

“I was incredibly thankful that they were able to save as many as they did, but clearly there will be some structures to rebuild, and we’ll have to deal with that structure by structure.”

Toews say he is thankful for all the firefighters, both professional and volunteer.

“To see a subdivision where the forest fire had largely gone through and to see the vast, vast majority of the houses still intact, residences still intact, was very encouraging and just a tribute again to our fire protection effort and the great work of our firefighters.”
