Town of Sexsmith finalizes 2023 budget

May 18, 2023 | 2:59 PM

Residents and businesses in the Town of Sexsmith will see increases on their tax bill in 2023.

The town has finalized its budget for the year, which will result in a three per cent property tax increase, and a two per cent commercial municipal tax rate hike.

The changes will amount to an increase of $23.42 residential and $32.26 commercial per $100,000 on an average property.

The $5.429 million budget includes $4.69 million set aside for operations, with inflation, a storm mitigation project, and an increase in payments to the province for policing among the main reasons for increases in that part of the budget.

Just under $740 thousand has been set aside for the capital portion of the budget, with highlights including the purchase of a gravel truck, a new fleet truck, and the purchase and installation of a new condenser unit for the arena.

A street improvement project that would improve drainage and future maintenance in the area in front of both the arena and Sexsmith Secondary school is still waiting for final recommendation and approval.

If approved, funding for that $760 thousand project would come from grants and capital reserves.

In a release, Sexsmith Mayor Kate Potter says “Even though we had to have an increase this year, we still maintain the lowest residential mill rate of any urban municipality in our region.
