UPDATE: Edmonton man charged after male air-lifted out of the wildfire evacuation area

May 23, 2023 | 12:08 PM

UPDATE: Fox Creek RCMP say Gunoor Singh of Edmonton is facing a charge of common nuisance.

Singh has been released and is due in Fox Creek court July 24.

Fox Creek RCMP is currently seeking to lay charges against a male, who attempted to use a gravel road to avoid a checkpoint.

On Friday, May 19 a large truck the male was driving had become stranded northwest of Fox Creek, after getting stuck in the mud.

Wildfires in the area began to surround the individual to the point where it was deemed unsafe for first responders to rescue the man.

However, a Forestry helicopter came to assist and airlifted the male to safety.

District Advisory Sergent Neal Fraser said in a release, “Alberta RCMP continue to be deployed with specialized units to assist with public safety and crime reduction efforts during these fires. Incidents like these only serve to put unnecessary strain on all first responders while threatening the safety of our communities.”

Mounties will provide more details when they become available.

RCMP would like to use this opportunity to remind the public to not travel in evacuation areas when possible, and always make sure you have plotted a safe route when traveling near areas affected by wildfires.
