Fire Restriction replaces ban in County of Grande Prairie

The Fire Ban in the County of Grande Prairie has been downgraded by the Regional Fire Service to a Fire Restriction heading into the weekend thanks to recent precipitation.

The towns of Sexsmith, Beaverlodge, and Wembley are included in the Fire Restriction and permitted burning is allowed for recreational fire pits, approved burn barrels and propane-fired appliances like barbecues, smokers, and fire pits.

County Fire Chief Trevor Grant said in a news release, “the recent precipitation is great news for the area.”

“We are still asking residents to be vigilant and only burn when necessary, as the risk of wildfires still exists across the region.”

The restriction does not allow for the use of wood campfires on public land but does allow wood campfires inside provincial campgrounds and on private property.

Those who have an approved permit to burn must follow all guidelines when burning and safe practices, including always remaining on site while burning until it is complete.

Residents are being reminded that burning is never permitted when winds reach or are forecasted to reach over 12 km/h or higher.
