2023 Student Vote sees NDP forming majority government

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Heading into the 2023 Provincial Election, elementary and high school students made their opinions known as part of Student Vote Alberta.

The initiative is spearheaded by CIVIX, which is a non-partisan registered Canadian charity focused on civic education.

After classes learned more about the election and the candidates, students from 1,097 schools in every electoral district cast their votes.

As of 6 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2023, 170,079 total votes were reported by Student Vote Alberta, with the results as follows:

  • The NDP took 42.1% of the popular vote and won 47 seats, forming a majority government. Rachel Notley won her seat in Edmonton-Strathcona.
  • The UCP will form the official opposition with 39 seats. The UCP won 40.4% of the popular vote. Danielle Smith won her seat in Brooks-Medicine Hat.
  • The Green Party received 6.6% of the popular vote. Jordan Wilkie lost his seat in Edmonton-Rutherford.
  • The Alberta Party received 2.3% of the popular vote. Barry Morishita lost his seat in Brooks-Medicine Hat.
  • The Solidarity Movement of Alberta received 2.3% of the popular vote. Artur Pawlowski lost his seat in Calgary-Elbow.
  • No other parties won seats, but Independent candidate Funky Banjoko was elected in Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo.
