Unofficial election results show UCP newcomer Nolan Dyck winning in Grande Prairie

Unofficial provincial election results are showing a United Conservative Party majority government should be expected in Alberta for the next four years.

The UCP held onto all five of their Peace Region ridings, with newcomer Nolan Dyck the MLA-elect for Grande Prairie.

“I am looking forward to seeing what the next couple weeks look like, being able to be the future MLA here in Grande Prairie, I believe (I am) getting sworn in here in the next couple weeks, and (will be) seeing the next steps. I feel good, but thankful for all the hard work and also (for) the team. The team was amazing and I’m just thankful for the unity we were able to show here in Grande Prairie, and (for) the next steps in that.”

Dyck is joined by four other northwestern UCP candidates, Ron Weibe in GP-Wapiti, Todd Lowen in Central Peace-Notley, Dan Williams in Peace River, and newcomer Scott Sinclair from Lesser Slave Lake.

As this will be his first term in the legislature, Dyck says there will be a learning curve from the start.

“Right off the bat, it’s going to be a lot of learning, a lot of listening, a lot of trying to take it all in, and then the next four years I’m really hoping to see we can make some good strides, in the area’s I have mentioned, healthcare, energy, and education.”

Dyck added these three topics, healthcare, energy, and education will be his main focus during his term, as he believes Alberta has some of the best teachers, doctors, and nurses in the country, along with a region that heavily relies on the energy sector.

“You know a lot of it is family for me. I love my kids and I want to keep seeing great education. We have some of the best educators, I think the best educators here, not just in Grande Prairie but in Alberta, and I want to continue to see that flourish and continue to grow across Alberta.”

“We also know, I believe in healthcare, and seeing the reality. We have some of the best doctors and nurses in the world and we’re going to keep seeing that, but we do have some more steps to take in order to make it more efficient right across the board.”

UCP Leader Danielle Smith was also re-elected in Brookes-Medicine Hat. NDP Leader Rachel Notley was re-elected in Edmonton-Strathcona.

Official results are expected by June 8.
