Jun 2, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The Peace Country Cowboys football team starts its season at home Saturday night against Cold Lake.

Cowboys player and vice-president Chad Wiebe says the team is excited to get going. He feels they are way ahead of where they were this time last year.

“I’ve got guys playing from all over Alberta. Believe it or not, we’ve got two American players playing for us this year, a guy from Florida and another from Pittsburgh are already here practicing with the team.”

“It’s a really big, probably a 50-man roster, which is exciting to say. Everything is in place.”

Wiebe says players from all over the world usually play in the Alberta Football League, something that allows them to get film of themselves that can lead to getting paid to play for teams in places like Germany, Australia and Japan.

He adds most of the players are from within an hour radius of Grande Prairie.

The Fighter Jets are the defending national champions. Wiebe says his side is excited to test itself against a team like this.

“Because we feel like we’ve grown so much this year as a team. Cold Lake is a very strong program. They went undefeated last year, including the national championship game. They recruit very well. … A majority of their teams comes out of Ontario.”

“Honestly, it’s the best way to measure up where we are at.”

Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at CKC Field. Minor football and high school players can get in for free if they wear their jerseys or have some other proof that they actually are football players.

Admission prices are $5.00 per adult or $10.00 for a family.
