ASIRT investigating officer involved shooting in Valleyview

The Alberta Serious Response Team has taken over an investigation from Valleyview RCMP.

On June 5 at 11:20 p.m., Mounties responded to a report of a suicidal male with a firearm.

Once officers arrived at the residence the male was located outside with a firearm and Mounties made communication to try and defuse the situation.

However, an officer fired their firearm and police immediately applied first aid, but the male succumbed to his injuries.

At this time ASIRT has taken over carriage of the investigation and Alberta RCMP said in a news release, “RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable.”

Alberta RCMP has also implemented their internal review process to gather all the information on what took place during the incident.
