Grande Prairie’s oldest home and first hospital open for the summer

Jun 7, 2023 | 6:07 PM

The Reverend Forbes Homestead and Pioneer Hospital are officially open for the season, offering tours four days a week.

It is located behind the QEII on 96 Street.

Free guided tours will be offered Wednesday to Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. until September 2.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a release, ” We look forward to another season of this fun and immersive experience for visitors of all ages to learn about our community’s historic beginnings and see how some of the first settlers made Grande Prairie the city it is today.”

Afternoon tea is also set to return in July and run until August. The city will roll out an official announcement, closer to the opening day.

The oldest home in Grande Prairie and the first hospital, are “treasured facilities in the community” according to Clayton. They were built in 1911 and served the first settlers of the Peace Region.

This tour will allow visitors a chance to view life in Grande Prairie during the 1900s, seeing a number of things from old antiques to primitive medical equipment and how exactly the Forbes family and their patients lived back then.
