Jun 21, 2023 | 11:31 AM

Several schools within the Peace Wapiti Public School District have special events planned for Wednesday in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

At Clairmont Community School, presenters Vanessa and Clinton Soto will visit the school for a day of dancing and drumming, while students and staff will also take part in hand games, bannock, and oral storytelling with rocks.

Students at Elmworth School, Beaverlodge Elementary School, and Whispering Ridge Community School will all hold land acknowledgments and hear O Canada sung in Cree.

Indigenous activities will take place all day at Hythe Regional School, including special performances from the Hythe Regional School Junior Jiggers and other performers. A complimentary beef stew lunch will be provided to students and staff.

The Treaty 8 flag will fly outside of Sexsmith Secondary School for the day, while students at Penson school in Grovedale will participate in classroom-based activities before gathering for an afternoon of Indigenous games, crafts, and stories.

Students at Harry Balfour School will spend time learning about Indigenous history and culture through activities and food.

Students at Rycroft School will enjoy a stew and bannock lunch, while a school barbecue and Indigenous games will be held at Teepee Creek School.

Students from both Helen E Taylor and Wembley Elementary Schools will gather to enjoy Indigenous drumming and dancing.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated annually on June 21, and is a day for Canadians to recognize and celebrate their unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
