New additions and amenities coming to the Veterans Memorial Garden & Interpretive Centre

Jul 4, 2023 | 7:00 AM

Since the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association received $72,222 in federal grant funding from Prairiescan and the Veteran’s Memorial Garden and Interpretive Centre becoming a recognized Alberta Museum, the Veteran’s Memorial Garden has some big plans in store.

Renne Charbonneau, Executive Director of the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association says the funding couldn’t have come at a better time.

“That was a breath of fresh air at a time when we really needed it. Part of that, that particular grant allows us to have sidewalls built for our pergolas so that if the wind comes up or, or it starts to rain, we’re in a position where we can protect whatever event, electronics, etc because you know how some of these summer storms can come up.”

Charboneau added this has been a goal of theirs since 2016, and a lot of work went into making it possible, and everyone is now very excited to see their hard work pay off. “To have undertaken this particular task, to become a recognized museum, to have a proper recession register, to have all of our processes and procedures all in place, our paperwork done properly, and that we follow all of the ethics and guidelines of the museum’s associations.”

Now, the Veteran’s Garden can offer a wide variety of activities to the public, and access to support for themselves, now having the ability to qualify for new grants only offered to recognized museums.

The garden is also looking into increased amenities for visitors, such as summer camps, ” We’re kind of talking about doing some stuff, not unlike the loyal Edmonton Regiment military museum does where they have like day camps and you can come and learn how to make a ghillie suit or you can come and learn how to run an obstacle course. There are a hundred different skills that could be taught. You could learn knot-tying one day that have so much value to bring to your life.” Said Charbonneau.

Multiple new additions and amenities are expected to be announced by the Veteran’s memorial garden and Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association in the coming months, including the new Indigenous War Memorial being unveiled in August.
