Increased reports of pets left in vehicles in Grande Prairie

Jul 10, 2023 | 11:31 AM

RCMP are reminding the public to not leave their furry friends in their vehicles with the warmer weather in the region.

There has been an increase of concerned calls of pets left in vehicles unattended recently and Mounties are recommending leaving fido at home where they have adequate space, water, and shade.

Temperature in vehicles can rise quickly in the summer heat and rolling down a window or parking in a shaded area can provide little to no relief for four-legged friends.

Police say if you see an animal in a parked vehicle and have concerns:

  • Note the license plate, vehicle make, model, and colour.
  • Go to a nearby business to have the owner paged to return to their vehicle immediately.
  • If you cannot locate the owner or, the animal is showing clear signs of heatstroke or other distress symptoms (exaggerated panting, lack of coordination, red or blue tongue and lips, convulsions or vomiting) call the police and stay at the vehicle until police arrive.
