Highlights from the city council meeting on Monday
Other highlights from Grande Prairie City Council’s meeting on Monday:
– Council has asked administration to look at a request from the Metis Local 1990 and report back to the committee level. The group has made a presentation to city council and written a letter to Mayor Clayton asking that ownership of the land on 99 Avenue across from RBC where the Elders Caring Shelter is located be transferred to the Metis local. It has been leasing the land from the city for 20 years, a lease that expired in February of this year. The letter to the mayor says owning the land and building would allow the possibility of future expansion.
– Council has voted to name Councillor Kevin O’Toole to the Games Organizing Committee for the 2025 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games. The event will be coming to Grande Prairie from July 11 to 13, 2025. Organizers had written a letter to Mayor Clayton asking that a member of council be named to the committee. The letter also says that this event will ” bring significant economic, social and health benefits to our community by through attracting visitors, community engagement and competitive sport.”
