Tree ownership and responsibility in Grande Prairie

Jul 12, 2023 | 10:09 AM

The City of Grande Prairie is providing information, to help clarify tree ownership and responsibility on privately titled properties.

Any trees located on the front and in some cases, the sides of titled properties are planted in what’s called; the boulevard.

This boulevard, as outlined in Bylaw C-1310, is a portion of land the city owns, which they usually use to plant trees, as they offer protection from the environment and road activities.

The City asks if you do plan on removing or maintaining any trees near these boulevards, to contact them first to confirm the ownership and ensure it gets the proper care. However, any trees located on private land are still the property owner’s responsibility.

Any trees planted on the boulevard would be a responsibility for the City’s team of certified arborists; who maintain, trim, remove, and replace trees as needed.

Lead Arborist Lisa Rehaluk said in a release, “Understanding property boundaries and tree ownership is crucial for residents. At the City, we provide valuable information and guidance, empowering residents to make informed decisions about tree care and maintenance.”

The City says they remains committed to having a thriving urban forest and supporting residents in their tree care efforts and encourages any residents who want more information or have questions, to click here.
