NWP’s National Bee Diagnostic Centre receives $1.75 million grant

Jul 17, 2023 | 11:47 AM

Funding from a federal government program has landed in the Peace Region for research and innovation at Northwestern Polytechnic’s National Bee Diagnostic Centre located in Beaverlodge.

The $1.75 million grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will provide funding for over five years of operations at the centre’s Technology Access Centre (TAC).

Ten years ago, the NBDC-TAC became the first Canadian TAC and quickly became a leader in bee diagnostics coming up with innovative solutions for honey beekeepers and the research community.

Today, the NBDC focuses on ecology, health, and management of all pollinators so Canadian pollinator-dependant crops can continue to produce as well as maintain healthy ecosystems.

Sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and conservation of native pollinators are also what the NBDC focuses on with beekeeping and honey producers.

NSERC partners with Canadian universities, colleges, and non-profits to fund innovators and support the research community in Canada.
