Local sports this weekend

Besides the Cowboys game Saturday, there are a bunch of other local athletes and teams are busy this weekend.

Rodeo

Fairview Amateur Rodeo goes Friday through Sunday at the Waterhole Rodeo grounds near Fairview. Team roping at 6 p.m. Friday. There will be barrel racing at 1 p.m. followed by the WRA rodeo at 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday

Manning Rodeo Saturday and Sunday. Events start at noon both days. Rodeo slack at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Baseball

Rycroft beat the County Brewers 12-7 last night to complete a 3-0 sweep in their Wheatbelt Baseball League semi-final. The Rage will take on Peace River in the final.

The Northern Lights U18 AAA baseball team is in Sherwood Park for provincials this weekend. They had two games Friday afternoon, then play again at 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday. They may also play on Sunday, depending on how they do.

Two Grande Prairie Reds baseball teams are at provincials this weekend. The 11U team will be in Beaumont, the 13U team will be in Lacombe.

Alberta Summer Games

Hundreds of athletes and coaches from several communities in the Peace are in Okotoks and Black Diamond this weekend for the Alberta Summer Games.

The competition got going today and will continue through Sunday. Results can be found here.

The 2024 Alberta Winter Games are coming to Grande Prairie in February. Grande Prairie also hosted the summer games in 2000 and 2004.

Other Sports

Horse racing at Evergreen Park Saturday and Sunday at 1:15 p.m. Sunday’s highlights will include the Wiener Dog Derby and the start of the Marathon Series.

The three biggest quarter horse races of the year also go on Sunday.

There is the Derby Challenge Final with a purse of $40,000 plus the Championship Challenge and Juvenile Challenge finals. The purse for those is $30,000 each.

The winner of all three races also earns a spot at the Quarter Horse Championships in Grand Prairie, Texas in October.

Game Country Archers is hosting its Wild & Wooly Shoot Saturday at Evergreen Park. Registration starts at 8 a.m. The event starts at 10 a.m. More information on the organization’s Facebook page.
