Trial dates set for company charged under OHS Act

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for a local company charged under the Occupational Health & Safety Act after the death of a worker.

The trial dates for Mainline Construction (2014) Ltd. have been set for June 3 to 11, 2024 in Grande Prairie court.

The charges stem from an incident on May 3, 2021, where a worker suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a pipe that was being loaded onto the back of a trailer. It happened near Sexsmith.

The charges include two under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker.

The third charge under the OHS code relates to making sure steps are taken to protect workers if something is moved, spilled, dislodged, or damaged.

Trial date set for one of four people charged after theft, drug investigation

Alberta Justice says a trial date has been set for one of the four people charged after a drug and theft investigation in the Spirit River-Rycroft area earlier this year.

The trial for Conrad Cain is set for January 29 in Grande Prairie court.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance after an investigation that started April 3.

Spirit River RCMP said at the time they got a report from someone saying a classic truck, two snowmobiles, two trailers, and vehicle parts had all been stolen.

The pickup was located four days later at a home in Rycroft where two people were arrested. The investigation led police to a second Rycroft home where engine parts and two trailers were located, and two more arrests were made.

A stay of proceedings is in place for the charges against the other three people, Richard Frey, Glyn Jones and Alison Glober.

They had each been facing one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Third sentence handed out in High Level-Grande Prairie drug case

Alberta Justice says a third person charged after a drug investigation by High Level RCMP and ALERT in Grande Prairie has been sentenced.

Douglas Earl Copeland of High Level was given a two-year conditional sentence order July 21 in High Level court on a charge of trafficking a controlled substance. These sentences are served in the community.

Five other charges were withdrawn.

He was one of four people charged October of 2020 after an investigation where police went after street-level drug sellers in High Level and Grande Prairie.

A search of a home in High Level turned up cocaine, cannabis, and cash.

Jersey Rennie of Paddle Prairie was given a 34-month sentence, with 10-months credit for time already spent in jail, in April of 2021. Randi Lynn Courtereille of High Level was given a nine-month sentence in August of last year. Both of these were for a charge of trafficking a controlled substance.

Police said at the time these arrests were announced, the fourth person’s charges had already been dealt with. Details were not released.
