Alberta Major Crimes Unit takes over Peace River homicide investigation

UPDATE:

Peace River RCMP has provided another update on the heavy police presence downtown, on Tuesday, August 1.

RCMP responded to a call of an unresponsive man in the area of 99 Street and 100 Avenue, identifying him as 44-year-old Fred Whitehead.

The victim was later determined to be deceased and the case was then handed off to the Alberta RCMP Major Crime Unit and deemed a homicide investigation.

After further investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested.

36-year-old Derek Harold Ward has a court date set for August 14 in Peace River.

Peace River Detachment Commander, Staff Sergent Browne, said in a release, “We would like to reassure the public that we believe this to be an isolated event and that there is no danger to members of the public in relation to this incident”

A suspect has already been arrested in relation to this investigation.

Peace River RCMP says they are currently on the scene near the area of 99 Street and 100 Avenue.

Police say there is no immediate threat to the public.

The public is asked to avoid the area and to follow the directions of responding officers.
