Mounties release tips on how to reduce vehicle theft

Aug 12, 2023 | 6:00 AM

With the hot summer months upon us, Albertans are enjoying the weather and spending more time outdoors. Mounties in Alberta say this leads to an increase in thefts of and from vehicles across the province.

Alberta RCMP say the top three months in 2023 thus far for vehicle thefts were:

  1. May (857)
  2. March (790)
  3. June (750)

For thefts from vehicles, the top three months are:

  1. June (778)
  2. May (766)
  3. July (670)

Over 4,500 reported thefts from a motor vehicle have been reported this year alone across the province, and just over 5,000 reported stolen.

Trucks have been the most commonly stolen type of vehicle in Alberta.

RCMP have released tips and suggestions on how to prevent the same thefts from happening to you.

  • Always make sure to lock your vehicle.
  • Never leave keys or garage door openers in your vehicle.
  • Never leave important documents with personal identifying information in your vehicle.
  • Ensure all valuables are removed or out of sight. This includes shopping bags, loose change, sunglasses, and any electronics.
  • Do not leave your windows open when you leave your vehicle.
  • If possible, store your vehicle in a locked garage when not in use.
  • Park your vehicle in well-lit areas and within sight. If you’re unable to park in a locked garage, keep outdoor lights on for added security.

This month, RCMP is using #AutoRoutine to provide information to the public on how to keep your vehicles safe.

Mounties also say that simple habits and routines can greatly reduce your chances of vehicle-related thefts year-round.
