Two charged after Grouard church fire ordered to stand trial

Alberta Justice says the two people charged after a fire destroyed a church in Grouard in May of this year have been ordered to stand trial.

Kenneth Ferguson and Gerald Capot have both been charged with arson-damage to property and break and enter to commit theft. Trial dates have not yet been set.

The fire happened May 22, Victoria Day.

Fire crews were called in around 3:30 that afternoon to the St. Bernard Catholic Church.

The Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan said it was built in 1902 and was the oldest in the Archdiocese.

Second accused in stolen property case sentenced

Alberta Justice says a second person charged after a stolen property investigation in the DeBolt area has been sentenced.

Amanda Gies was given 120 days in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of stolen property over $5000 August 9 in Grande Prairie court. Seven other charges were withdrawn.

Gies and Thomas Emard were both arrested after stolen property was recovered near DeBolt on December 11, 2021.

RCMP said at the time that a search turned up two pickups, a trailer full of tools, welding units, copper wire and numerous other stolen items, along with 20 grams of methamphetamine.

Emard was given the same sentence after pleading guilty to the same charge in April of this year.
