Alberta communities set cool temperature records Sunday

CANMORE, AB – It is not often that we report on historically cool weather in August.

However, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said that is exactly what happened in six communities in Alberta on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

The Hendrickson Creek area, west of Edmonton, had the lowest daily minimum temperature record at -3.8 degrees Celsius. That is tied for the community’s record set in 2021.

Coronation experienced its coldest August 20th in 91 years, getting down to -1.4 in the community east of Red Deer. Its previous record was set in 1932.

The full list of daily minimum temperature records in Alberta, as provided by ECCC, are as follows:

  • Bow Valley (Provincial Park) Area
    • New record of -2.6
    • Old record of -2.2 set in 1970
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1928
  • Coronation Area
    • New record of -1.4
    • Old record of 1.1 set in 1932
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1912
  • Esther Area
    • New record of 0.0
    • Old record of 1.0 set in 1986
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1985
  • Hendrickson Creek Area
    • Tied record of -3.8 set in 2021
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1995
  • Highvale Area
    • New record of 3.8
    • Old record of 4.1 set in 2006
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1977
  • Jasper Area
    • New record of -1.7
    • Old record of -1.1 set in 1947
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1916

It is quite the turnaround in temperatures in just one week as ECCC announced new heat records in five southern Alberta communities on August 15, 2023. Temperatures reached as high as 36.6 degrees at the hottest part of the day in the Taber area.
