Cross-county cyclist raising funds for disabled youth

Aug 22, 2023 | 8:00 AM

A cyclist on the last leg of a trip around the country is taking a well-earned break in Grande Prairie.

Matt Devine has ridden from Newfoundland to the Yukon to raise $100,000 for You Can Ride 2 a non-profit that assists disabled children.

“They put children with disabilities, whether they’re physical or mental limitations,” Devine says. “They fit the bikes for the kids, and the kids enjoy the joy and freedom and the transformational impact riding bikes has.”

Devine also wants to encourage adults and show them the benefits of health and fitness.

“No matter how old you are, what condition you’re in, you can do something that not only benefits your community but will help the individual also feel better about themselves and lead a happier life,” he says. “20 years ago I was 300 lbs. I was a smoker, a heavy drinker, I was probably close to having a heart attack in five years. I want to show people anything’s possible.”

Devine will be at the Crown and Anchor Pub Tuesday afternoon (August 22) for anyone to meet him or donate to his cause before he sets off for the finish line in Edmonton, on Wednesday, August 23.
