Safety tips for those on the water this Labour Day long weekend

Sep 2, 2023 | 3:41 PM

The Lifesaving Society, Alberta and N.W.T. branch, is offering up some safety tips for those taking to the water this long weekend.

Their advice is as follows:

Always Wear a Lifejacket on a Boat: Wearing a lifejacket is a the most effective tool to reduce boating-related drownings. Before entering the water or going on a boat, ensure that your lifejacket is the correct size, fits snugly, and is Transport Canada approved.

Know Your Limits: Be honest about your swimming abilities before entering a body of water. Do not go swimming in deep water without a lifejacket if you cannot swim. Do not attempt to rescue someone in deep water if you are not trained to do so – instead, alert a lifeguard or call 911.

Stay Within Arms’ Reach and Provide Active Adult Supervision: Whether at a lake, river, pool or bathtub, closely and constantly watch children when they are in or around any type of water. Consider designating an adult to supervise children swimming. Always keep young children within arms’ reach of an adult.

Stay Sober In, On, and Around the Water: Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor in boating-related fatalities. Alcohol can reduce balance, coordination, and judgement, and its effects are heightened by sun exposure, wind, waves and dehydration, making it more difficult to get yourself out of trouble.
