Sask-based Twinkle Stars Project looks for more Albertan volunteers

A Sasketchewan-based not-for-profit, the Twinkle Stars Project, is looking for more volunteers, to support their basket project initiative in Alberta.

The not-for-profit, which came to Alberta in 2019, was created to support people, who have experienced a stillborn birth or a miscarriage.

Vanessa Braun, Twinkle Stars Board member says, “Our goal is to make sure no family, no mother, has to experience pregnancy loss unsupported.”

Currently, the Twinkle Project is supporting families across Alberta through their basket project, by providing a memento to remember their child by.

“These baskets are so unique and our clients who use them, they (the baskets) end up in memory boxes that they can look at for the rest of their lives, knowing this is one of the only items that their baby ever touched. Sometimes, they end up cremated or buried with the baby, and that is one of the highest honors.”

Braun added, anyone looking to volunteer, but has no pre-existing knitting experience, or your just not interested in knitting, is still welcome.

“Our patterns are super simple, so I actually learned how to knit from our baskets, but if you’re not a knitter or crocheter you absolutely can learn with our patterns. Now on the other side, if you think ‘you know what, I don’t want to learn to crochet’ there’s always a place for you.”

Braun says they are always looking for people to join their committee, which meets online and consists of people from across Alberta, who all work to figure out ways to bring other supports offered by Twinkle Stars to Alberta, such as Peer Support, or their annual Silent Hearts Walk.

Albertans living in the Edmonton and Medicine Hat area can also support the organization at their delivery centres, by sorting baskets, collecting orders, and shipping mementos.

To volunteer, visit their website, click the volunteer tab, and fill out the form. The not-for-profit will then contact you with all the information you need and then will ask you to “join the Alberta Facebook group for all the Knitters and crocheters,” to get up-to-date information on what the organization needs.

If you are not interested in volunteering but still want to support the not-for-profit, you can visit their shop, or make a donation.
