County of GP applying for wildfire vegetation control work grant

Sep 11, 2023 | 3:22 PM

County of Grande Prairie Council is taking further steps to reduce the impact of future wildfires.

Council has directed staff to apply to the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta Grant to complete further vegetation management in the Highway 40 West FireSmart area.

General manager of Community Services Darryl Martin says the funding is in addition to the funds also requested in August to update the County Wildfire Mitigation Strategy.

“We had some significant changes in the landscape, with the fires and the ongoing remediation work and such,” Martin says. “This is the ongoing vegetation management, so it’s a second grant separate from the other one.”

Martin says if the request is approved, the work in Highway 40 West will cover the next 20-25 hectares of land not included in the current fuel reduction work in the area and there should be minimal to no delays in between projects.

“What I’m trying to do is just not have any lulls in the work, and not have any gaps so we can continue to keep working through this,” he says. “As our new plan is developed that encompasses the entire county, we’ll be able to pivot and move this work to wherever it needs to be based on priority basis coming out of that report.”

Pending the request’s approval, the extra work will not begin until the current project is completed.

The maximum grant amount available is $200,000 dollars.
