Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership Manager wins Emergency Service Award

A Grande Prairie resident is being recognized for her efforts in executing emergency management activities.

Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership Manager Jennifer Wood is among the recipients of the 2021-2022 Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award for people and organizations that provide exceptional service in emergency situations.

Wood says receiving the award was a humbling experience for herself and GPREP.

“We’ve worked very hard here in our partnership to improve our ability to respond to emergencies and disasters and to be prepared for them,” Wood says. “I’m excited and I think it’s exciting for the whole community and everybody that’s been part of it.”

The awards were presented at a ceremony in Ottawa Thursday night. While Wood was not in attendance, GPREP has been hard at work assisting evacuees from the Northwest Territories.

“GPREP has been involved with providing support to evacuees from the Northwest Territories over the last, I think it’s just about four weeks now,” she says. “As a major centre in the northwest of the province, we are certainly one of the communities that the province and other areas look to, to be able to help support evacuees in situations like this.”

Wood hopes GPREP will serve as a good model for cooperation and coordination in the future.

“I hope our success continues to inspire others in the emergency management field to improve their preparedness, and for communities to continue to be prepared for emergencies and disasters.”

The other Alberta EMESA recipients include Cheryl Bourassa of Alberta Health Services, Percy Janke of St. Albert Emergency Services, incident command system instructor Julien Bergeron, and the Tsuut’ina First Nation.
