Design Works Centre Twin Ice Rink celebrates 20th anniversary

Residents of Grande Prairie are being invited by the city to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the twin ice rinks at the Design Works Centre on Saturday, September 23.

Over the years this facility has hosted a number of events, including the 2007 Oilers Training Camp, the 2022 Grand Slam of Curling, the 2017 Hockey Alberta Day, and the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

To commemorate all these great events, the city is hosting a free community barbeque starting at 11 a.m. and a variety of free ice-themed activities, including:

  • A colouring contest – 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Public skate – 10 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. & 3:15 p.m.-5 p.m.
  • Stick & puck times (Shinny) – 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m
  • Try it Speed Skating – 11:15 a.m. – noon
  • Try it Sledge Hockey – 1 p.m.- 2:45 p.m
  • Try it Ringette – 1 p.m.- 2:45 p.m
  • Cookie decorating (while supplies last) – 10 a.m. – 3 p.m
  • A hockey skills competition – noon – 1:45 p.m
  • Figure skating demonstration – 12:15 p.m. – 12:45 p.m

A Grande Peace Athletic Club Alumni hockey game is also scheduled to take place, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a release, “We’re excited to celebrate this incredible milestone at one of the City’s pillar ice sport facilities that has meant so much to our community, and look ahead to its continued success.”
