Trial dates set for two men charged after Grouard church fire

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for two men charged after a church fire in Grouard in May of this year.

The trial for Kenneth Ferguson and Gerald Capot is set for May 21 to 24, 2024 in Peace River.

The fire happened on Victoria Day.

Fire crews were called in around 3:30 that afternoon to the St. Bernard Catholic Church.

The Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan said it was the oldest church in the area. It was built in 1902.

Ferguson and Capot have been charged with arson-damage to property and break and enter to commit theft.

Community sentence after shots fired incident near Lymburn

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a shots fired incident in 2022 near Lymburn has been given a nine-month conditional sentence order.

Ronald Pruss pleaded guilty to charges of discharging a firearm with intent, pointing a firearm, and mischief causing damage under $5,000 September 18, in Grande Prairie court.

Beaverlodge RCMP said at the time that on August 21, 2022, they got a report of a shooting in the Lymburn area.

Mounties said a suspect had blocked a road with a cable, forcing a vehicle to stop.

The suspect then shot at the vehicle. The driver got away and there were no injuries.

Conditional sentence orders are served in the community.

Six month jail sentence after assault, theft

Alberta Justice says the man charged after an assault and theft at a Grande Prairie business in May of this year has been given a 180-day jail sentence.

Jayden Ferguson pleaded guilty to charges of theft under $5,000, assault, and resisting a peace officer in Grande Prairie court. Two other charges were withdrawn.

Credit was given for time already spent in custody, with 52 days left to serve.

He was charged after an incident at a business located at 99 Avenue and 92 Street on May 20, 2023.

RCMP said at the time they got a report just before 10:00 p.m. when a suspect tried to steal items from the business but was confronted by an employee.

The suspect assaulted the employee during an altercation and threatened the employee with a knife.

Mounties say the employee suffered what they called serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Jail time for two people after drug trafficking arrest

Alberta Justice says two people charged in a 2021 drug bust in Grande Prairie have each been given jail sentences of two-and-a-half years.

Blain Patrick Quinn pleaded guilty to two counts of trafficking a controlled substance. Two other charges were withdrawn. He was given six months credit for time already spent in custody.

Zackery Taylor Vanderlans pleaded guilty to a single count of trafficking a controlled substance. He was given 639 days credit for time already spent in custody, leaving 261 days left to serve.

Both men were charged after a five-week investigation into drug selling in March and April 2022.

RCMP said at the time a search of a home tuned up methamphetamine, GHB, fentanyl, and pills.

Time served sentence after suspicious vehicle chase

Alberta Justice says an incident that involved a chase of a suspicious vehicle in 2022 has resulted in a sentence of time served for the accused.

Kolton Weaver pleaded guilty to two charges of flight from a police officer, failure to comply with a probation order, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The charges stemmed from an incident that happened early in the morning of August 1, 2022.

RCMP said at the time, officers on patrol recognized a suspicious vehicle in the area of 96 Street and 116 Avenue in the city. The driver took off when police tried to do a traffic stop.

That same vehicle later collided with a police vehicle near 102 Street and 107 Avenue.

The suspect had to be taken to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
