City Councillor Bressey elected to vice-president post with Alberta Municipalities

A Grande Prairie city councillor has been elected as a vice president with Alberta Municipalities.

Dylan Bressey was voted into the role of vice-president of cities up to 500,000 people at the recent Alberta Municipalities Convention in Edmonton.

Bressey says he loves having the chance to help other councils around Alberta do good work.

“We do that through advocacy. We do that by providing training and other resources to elected officials and senior staff and we do that through the corporate services we provide.”

“I know that on the advocacy side, the biggest thing that is going to be before our board over the next few months is talking about the local government fiscal framework. Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen dramatic reductions in provincial funding for municipal infrastructure.”

Bressey says those reductions mean higher property taxes and a reduced quality of life for people across Alberta.

He adds there are two reasons he is excited for Grande Prairie to have him in this post.

“I get to go across the province, learning what’s going on in other communities and bring back the best practices here to Grande Prairie.”

“I also get to keep my ear to the ground so that when there are important conversations going on that can impact Grande Prairie, I can help our mayor and our council know what’s going on and be involved in those conversations.”

Bressey says in this role, he is there on behalf of all municipalities and communities, not just Grande Prairie, but still thinks having a local person listening to what is going on provincial is helpful to this community.
