Province boosting support for women in STEM

Women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields can now apply for the Women in STEM Scholarship.

Oct. 8-14 is Women in STEM Week and Alberta’s government says it has opened applications for the Women in STEM Scholarship.

“We are committed to empowering women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Scholarships like these enable success and encourage a new generation of innovation, development, and continuing Alberta’s economic success,” says Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.

Provincial officials say women make up about half of Alberta’s population but represent only about one-third of enrolments in STEM programs and about one-quarter of employees in STEM fields. Officials say this scholarship is hoped to be one way to help increase those numbers by supporting women and gender-diverse individuals who are pursuing careers in STEM fields where their gender is underrepresented or who are working to advance gender equality in their chosen field.

“As Alberta’s economy continues to grow and diversify, more and more women are expanding their repertoire of talents by pursuing rewarding careers in STEM. Now, more than ever, we are committed to strengthening Alberta’s talent pipeline to meet workforce demands,” adds Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Advanced Education.

The provincial government says this scholarship will support women pursuing careers in STEM, helping them gain valuable skills for today’s economy and preparing them for higher-paying jobs in the future. The scholarship total of $125,000 aims to grant each successful applicant $2,500 to support their studies.

“The Alberta Women’s in Science Network (AWSN) proudly endorses the Women in STEM Scholarship initiative. This scholarship, launched during Women in STEM Week, promotes skill development and gender equality in STEM, advancing a more inclusive and prosperous STEM community in Alberta,” says Ela Dudek, president, Alberta Women’s Science Network.

“When women can reach their full potential, it helps Alberta thrive. That’s why empowering women in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields is a priority for Alberta’s government. They, in turn, bring their skills and creativity to our thriving provincial economy,” shares Matt Jones, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade.
