City launches customizable notification service

Oct 13, 2023 | 6:22 AM

The City of Grande Prairie is launching a new texting service to improve the way residents receive important information.

Residents will be able to opt in for updates to be sent directly to their phones or email.

Communications Coordinator with the City, Mallory Chalmers, says the service will allow residents to customize what kind of updates they receive.

“If somebody is interested in getting notifications on snow removals, when they should move their car or be prepared for that? They would be able to select their neighbourhood and select ‘Snow Removal’ and be able to receive customized, tailored notifications specific exactly to where they live and the type of information they want to know.”

Chalmers says the service was meant to address communications gaps in sending important information to residents.

“We realized that we kind of had a little bit of a gap that we wanted to fill to be able to get notifications straight to people’s phones.”

“Prior, we were always sending things via e-mail which was great. But not everyone is the best at checking their email where technology lives at your fingertips. So, if you can get a text with the information we just knew it would be better.”

Chalmers says you can register for the service by clicking here.

“There’s a little button on there that says ‘Opt-in for SMS Text Service updates’ and from there it’s pretty easy, you just follow all the steps. Step one would be to heading to Access GP’s website and then step two would be to either make an account or go in and update your settings if you already have an existing account.”

All messages will be sent from 311-000.

Anyone with a pre-existing AccessGP account will need to re-register to take advantage of the new service.
