Oct 18, 2023 | 7:52 PM

Peace Regional RCMP is issuing a warning regarding the consumption of street drugs after two overdoses in Grimshaw.
Peace Regional RCMP received two calls to assist EMS, and the Grimshaw Fire Department in suspected fentanyl overdoses today. (Wednesday, October 18.)
One individual was transported to a hospital and is now recovering. However, despite efforts from emergency responders, one of the residents, a 29-year-old man, was pronounced deceased.
Mounties are now using information from one of these calls to conduct welfare checks on two other individuals.
At this time, Peace Regional RCMP is investigating these overdoses, but they are concerned for the community’s safety regarding street drug consumption. Reminding the public, “street drugs are not always what they appear to be.”
In the release, RCMP provided a list of safe practices for anyone who will be consuming street drugs:
  • Avoid using while alone.
  • Ask someone to check on you or use while on the phone with a trusted person able to call for assistance in the event of an overdose.
  • Use supervised consumption services (SCS) if possible. Always do a test dose to check the potency or strength of the drug.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of poisoning/overdose and call 911 for direction and support.
  • Carry a naloxone kit and know how to use it to respond to a suspected opioid poisoning/overdose.
Peace Regional RCMP also shared a list of overdose signs:
  • Slow, irregular and shallow breathing.
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness.
Residents are also being reminded, in the event of an overdose, higher doses of the antidote naloxone are needed, but it may not always be effective.
Peace Regional RCMP ask anyone with information about any of these overdoses, to contact the Peace Regional RCMP detachment at 780-624-6611, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com.
