EmployAbilities Grande Prairie first ever Inclusive Employer Awards winners announced

Oct 24, 2023 | 4:05 PM

Local non-for-profit EmployAbilities Grande Prairie recognized two local businesses for their support of disabled employees earlier this month.

Job developer Kristen Reiswig says EmployAbilities presented their first Inclusive Employer Awards on October 1, to coincide with Disability Employment Awareness Month and recognize accommodating employers.

“Being sure to provide accommodations and overall having a very welcoming environment, and embodying the spirit of Disability Employment Awareness Month.” Reiswig says. “We want to use these awards to honor employers for their contributions to help people with disabilities and other barriers participate to their fullest in the labour market.”

Reiswig says one of the winners was Wesco Distribution, who hired six EmployAbilities participants last year.

“They’ve been really great at providing accommodation for their staff. There’s three staff members that are former participants of ours who are still employed to this day, and they all have nothing but great things to say about Wesco. Wesco definitely prides themselves on having a very inclusive and diverse environment.”

Reiswig says the other winner was Integra Tire, and Auto Centre for their accommodating treatment of an employee with unique needs.

“They’d been really fantastic in providing accommodations for him,” She says. “In the form of things like flexible scheduling, modified work duties, allowing him to work shorter shifts so he doesn’t get overwhelmed.”

The awards were presented at the grand opening of EmployAbilities Grande Prairie’s new office on October 11.
