Nine-year sentence in manslaughter case

Alberta Justice says a John D’or Prairie woman has been given a nine-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Sandra Wapoose was given the sentence on October 25 in Peace River court after pleading guilty to the lesser offence on May 1.

She was originally charged with murder after the death of 57-year-old Barry Lizotte on October 17, 2019.

RCMP said at the time they got a report of a dead man outside of a Fort Vermillion home.

Waposse was arrested at the scene.

Jail sentence for one accused after police pursuit

Alberta Justice says one of the two people charged after a police pursuit in February of 2020 has been given a 480-day jail sentence.

Spencer Wilson was given the sentence on October 16 in Grande Prairie court after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of flight from a peace officer and another count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

RCMP said at the time that on February 28, 2020, officers on patrol in the Clairmont industrial area saw a suspicious vehicle, one that had been stolen in Grande Prairie.

When Mounties tried to stop the vehicle, a police vehicle was rammed and a pursuit that lasted 11 minutes ensued. The suspects used bear spray during the pursuit to try to keep RCMP from giving chase.

The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle got stuck in snow at Range Road 62 and Township Road 730. The driver was arrested after a short chase on foot.

Charges were withdrawn against the second suspect, Andrew Moores.

Trial date set for one suspect after shot fired in Cadotte Lake

Alberta Justice says a trial date has been set for one of the people charged after an incident in Cadotte Lake earlier this month where a shot was fired.

The trial for Chaos Daryl Ghostkeeper is set for January 18, 2024, in Peace River.

He was charged after Mounties were called out September 13 after reports of a gun being fired and a vehicle being stolen in Cadotte Lake. Police said at the time that they believe this was targetted.

A second suspect, Edward Floyd Flett, remains at large.

Charges dismissed against accused in Hines Creek break-in, dangerous driving case

Alberta Justice says all charges have been dismissed against the man charged after a May incident that involved a break-in and a dangerous driving call.

All five charges against Kyle Robinson of Brownvale were dismissed October 25 in Peace River court, the same day he was set to stand trial.

Robinson was facing counts that included dangerous operation of a vehicle and possession of stolen property.

He was arrested after an incident near Hines Creek on May 31, 2023.

Fairview RCMP said at the time that they got a report of a break-in at a rural business. A witness confronted the suspect in a vehicle, resulting in the witness’s vehicle being run off the road.

The suspect later crashed his vehicle into a second vehicle after witnesses tried to confront him.

The same vehicle had earlier been reported stolen in the Grimshaw area.

Not guilty verdict for man charged after incidents in the McLennan area

Alberta Justice says a man charged in connection with several incidents in the McLennan area has been found not guilty of nearly all charges.

Muktar Ali of Nampa was found not guilty in Peace River court on 14 of 16 charges he had been facing. Those included kidnapping/confinement with a firearm, two of robbery, one of threats to cause bodily harm and a long list of firearms-related counts.

There was an order for discharge and a seized items order for two other counts.

Ali was one of two people arrested by McLennan RCMP in August off 2021 after police spotted a suspicious vehicle near Highway 49 and Range Road 24.

Ali and Samantha Linnea Camber of Girouxville were arrested on the scene on outstanding warrants and charges of possession of stolen property.

Police said at the time that further investigation led to other charges related to crimes that happened in the jurisdiction of the McLennan detachment.

A stay of proceedings was put in place on all charges against Camber in September of 2023.

She had been facing similar charges to Ali’s.
