Local sports for Wednesday: Hockey games, CFR starting, curling update

Hockey

The Storm travel to Whitecourt Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. face-off.

Grande Prairie is 8-6-2 on the season. The Wolverines are 7-10 with a shoot-out loss

There is one game in the Northwest Junior Hockey League Wednesday, Fairview in Sexsmith. Puck-drop will be at 8 p.m.

Rodeo

The Canadian Finals Rodeo starts Wednesday night in Red Deer.

Eight cowgirls and cowboys from the Peace will be taking part.

The list includes Charlie Lake’s Tyrel Roberts in saddle broncs, Brooke Wills of Arras and Lane Wills of Pouce Coupe in barrel racing, and Fort St. John’s Stephen Culling in steer wrestling.

Jett Lambert of Grande Prairie and Jake Gardner from Fort St. John will both be in the bull riding.

Chase Siemens of Chetwynd and Denver Leitch of Grimshaw are both competing in novice barebacks.

The CFR runs through Sunday.

Curling

Team Gushue has clinched a top four spot at the Pan Continental Curling Championships being played in Kelowna.

This after an 8-1 win Wednesday morning over Chinese Taipei.

The win also guarantees Canada a spot at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship to be played in Switzerland.

Canada will play Australia Wednesday, then finish the round robin Thursday against Guyana.

The semi-finals go Friday.

Beaverlodge’s Geoff Walker is the lead on the Gushue rink.
