Provincial grant helps fund new electric carts for local campgrounds

Nov 4, 2023 | 6:00 AM

Two County of Grande Prairie campgrounds are reaping the benefits of a provincial grant from the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities program.

Pipestone Creek and Hommy Campground were both looking to replace two old maintenance golf carts.

This led to the county applying for provincial grant funding, which was provided through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.

The County was then given $7,041 to offset the purchase of the two new electric carts.

The full cost to replace both carts came out to $37,602. However, the original were nearing the end of their life cycle, experiencing breakdowns and mechanical challenges.

In a release, the County says they are already seeing the benefits, as they were saving money this summer on maintenance and gas while reducing downtime.

Director of Parks & Recreation Christine Rawlins spoke about the cart’s impact at the campgrounds in that release saying “Thanks to the support of MCCAC, we can continue to perform park duties with minimal noise and no emissions, improving the camping experience for our guests while reducing greenhouse gases.”

This funding was provided to the County, through MCCAC, which was created by a partnership with Alberta Municipalities, Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta.
