Government seeking feedback to improve elections

Nov 7, 2023 | 11:02 AM

EDMONTON, AB – The Government of Alberta is looking for feedback from the public and stakeholders on the Local Authorities Elections Act and the Municipal Government Act.

Two new surveys are giving Albertans the opportunity to provide feedback on how to improve elections processes and how to better hold locally elected officials accountable.

The surveys are available online until December 6, 2023. The information gathered will build on feedback from the past two years in terms of local elections and councillor accountability.

Ric McIver, Minister of Affairs said, “We review local elections laws regularly to make sure the rules continue to strengthen transparency and accountability in our local elections and elected officials.”

He added, “I encourage all eligible Albertans to complete these surveys and have their say on how we can strengthen local democracy in Alberta.”

The survey is seeking feedback not only from the public, but from municipal administrators, municipal associations and locally elected officials as well.

The survey focused on the Local Authorities Election Act includes questions about how local elections are conducted, including advance voting, voter eligibility and the involvement of political parties at the local level.

The other survey, focused on the Municipal Government Act, asks questions related to the accountability and transparency of locally elected officials, including disqualification rules, monetary conflicts of interest, disclosure of information and required training for councillors.

Links to both surveys are available at the Government of Alberta website.
