NWP appoints a local as new President & CEO

Nov 14, 2023 | 3:22 PM

A Fairview local, GPRC grad (now NWP), and former Wolves student-athlete, will be assuming the president and CEO role for Northwestern Polytechnic.

Dr. Vanessa Sheane has been appointed as permanent President and CEO, after assuming the interm role in the summer, when former President and CEO Justin Kohlman departed from his role.

Dr. Sheane brings a wealth of knowledge to this role, working at NWP for 12 years, while holding a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Victoria.

Dr. Sheane has also worked in hospital emergency and medical units with AHS for nearly 12 years, as a Registered Nurse.

Board Chair, Shawna Miller says what led to NWP’s Board of Governors decision, “Dr. Sheane has deep roots in our region as well as an impactful history at Northwestern Polytechnic. Not only is she acutely aware of the nuances in our learning community, she has a profound appreciation of the important linkages between post-secondary and our communities, industries, economy, and overall competitiveness.”

This move comes after months of controversy surrounding former President and CEO Justin Kohlman, over the new direction of NWP and the cutting of art and music programs.

Over the course of his tenure, Kohlman oversaw a number of big projects, including; the transition to NWP, NWP’s first Business Conference, the opening of a new education wing in the GPRH, signing a memorandum of understanding with an Ireland-based University, the addition of a Bachelor of Business Administration program and NWP’s first brithday.

Kohlman was in the role for just over two years, after being brought on in, the summer of 2021.

Dr. Sheane says ” It is an exciting time for NWP as we continue to serve students both inside and outside of the classroom, embrace our polytechnic mandate, and seize the opportunities for growth in our region.”
