Court update: Trial ordered after death of High Prairie baby, sentencing for one accused after incident near Sexsmith, charges dismissed in two other cases

Murder trial ordered in High Prairie court after death of a baby

Alberta Justice says the person charged after a baby died in High Prairie has been ordered to stand trial.

Kyra Renee Backs will stand trial on a charge of second degree murder. Trial dates have not yet been set.

Backs was charged after a seven-month-old infant died on October 6, 2022.

High Prairie RCMP said at the time that Backs had been running a day home at the time of the baby’s death.

Two-plus years in jail for one accused in shot fired incident near Sexsmith

Alberta Justice says one of the two people charged after a shot fired incident near Sexsmith last year has been given a jail sentence of just over two years.

Darcy Beckman of Saddle Hills County was given a total jail sentence of 810 days. That includes 540 days for flight from a peace officer, a consecutive 180 days on a firearms possession charge and another 90 days consecutive on a charge of shopbreaking with intent.

He was also handed shorter concurrent sentences on charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and two more of failure to comply.

Beckman pleaded guilty to all of these charges.

He was arrested after an incident on October 28, 2022. Grande Prairie Rural RCMP said at the time they got a report of a break-in at around 10:30 p.m. from the area of Range Road 62 and Township Road 731.

Mounties said a shot was taken at the vehicle belonging to the person who made the complaint.

Two suspects were later located in a stolen truck.

The other man charged, Colton Beckman also of Saddle Hills County, is due back in court on February 20.

Charges in Valleyview carjacking case dismissed

Alberta Justice says all charges against two men charged after a carjacking near Valleyview have been dismissed.

The charges against Dorian Anakian Harvey and Wendell McLean were dismissed November 9 in Valleyview court, the same day they were due to stand trial.

Harvey was facing 15 counts, including unlawfully in a dwelling house and multiple weapons and failure to comply charges. McLean had been facing four charges, including weapons and unlawfully in a dwelling house violations.

The charges stem from an incident on March 28, 2023, on a road west of Valleyview.

Someone had tried to help after a vehicle with two people inside looked like it had gotten stuck in the snow.

The two then pointed a firearm and stole the victim’s vehicle.

Charges in Grimshaw assault case dismissed

Alberta Justice says all the charges against the accused after a report of an assault in Grimshaw have been dismissed.

The charges against Hayes Dale Robert Fuller-Garand were dismissed on November 6 in Peace River court, the same day he was to stand trial.

Fuller-Garand had been facing nine charges including two of assault, one of each of unlawful confinement, harassment, housebreaking with intent, and mischief causing damage under $5,000.

He was charged after an incident in May of this year.

Grimshaw RCMP got a report on May 3 of a man with a firearm making threats in a rural area near Grimshaw.

Area residents were told by police to shelter in place. The suspect was located by the police dog and taken into custody.

Time served for three accused in drug arrest

Alberta Justice says three people charged after a break-in investigation led to a drug seizure have been given time-served jail sentences.

All three entered guilty pleas in Grande Prairie court in late October.

Mitchell Stanley Hall was given 210 days time served after pleading guilty to five charges that included two weapons counts, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Dwayne Olson was given time served after pleading guilty to two charges of resisting a peace officer and failure to comply with a probation order.

Hayley Danielle Brousseau was given 120 days time served on charges of possession of a prohibited weapon and failure to comply.

They were arrested after Grande Prairie RCMP got a report on September 22, 2022, of a break and enter in a Crystal Ridge home.

The investigation led to a search at another home in Crystal Village.

RCMP seized stolen property from the break-in, firearms, and what they believed were cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Five people had originally been charged.

In December of 2022, Dallas John Wolsey was given 90 days in jail and one year probation on three charges, one related to weapons and two to possession of stolen property.

All charges against Stephanie Hido were withdrawn in February.
