EDMONTON, AB – The provincial government has appointed a new assistant chief justice of the Alberta Court of Justice, Criminal Division, for a five-year term.

Justice Joyce L. Lester will assist the chief justice and oversee many legal matters in the Alberta Court of Justice.

James Hunter, chief justice of the Alberta Court of Justice, said, “Justice Lester is a skilled and compassionate justice with excellent leadership skills. Her hard work and dedication will be an asset to the court as a whole and I look forward to working with her as she takes on the role of assistant chief justice for the Edmonton Criminal Division.”

Prior to her being appointed as assistant chief justice of the Alberta Court of Justice, she served as a justice for the Edmonton Criminal Division of the Alberta Court of Justice since 2014.

Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, said “With a distinguished career spanning almost 40 years, Justice Lester has proven herself to be a true advocate for justice. I am confident she will excel in this new role.”
