One of two accused in business break and enters sentenced

Alberta Justice says one of two people charged after break-ins at a Grande Prairie businesses earlier this year has been sentenced.

Dakota Belcourt of Hythe was handed a 1,007-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to charges that include break and enter to steal a firearm, theft over $5,000, mischief causing damage under $,5000, and two weapons charges.

He was given 276 days credit for time already spent in custody.

RCMP said at the time an investigation started after reports of several break-and-enters on May 22 and 23, 2023, at a business located at 100 Street and 119 Avenue.

Police identified a suspect, searched a home and found evidence connecting the suspect to several other business break-ins that happened in April and May.

Co-accused Allan Cloutier of Grande Prairie is scheduled to stand trial on January 18, 2024.

Trial dates set in Cadotte Lake murder

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been in a murder case from Cadotte Lake.

The trial for Clint Carifelle is scheduled for December 1-13, 2024, in Peace River court.

He was charged after the shooting death of 34-year-old Keith Carifelle.

Peace Regional RCMP said at the time on September 12, 2021, they got a report of a man going to the Cadotte Lake EMS station with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to hospital in Grande Prairie via STARS, where he later died.

Clint Carifelle was arrested two days later.

Charges dismissed against accused in stolen copper, property case

Alberta Justice says all the charges against two people charged after copper wire, vehicles, and construction equipment were reported stolen in the Spirit River area have been dismissed.

Tyler Ray Davyduke and Katelynn Mary Burlock Gallagher, both of Saddle Hills County, had been facing charges that included two counts each of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and tampering with a vehicle identification number.

Spirit River RCMP said at the time they were charged after a search of a rural property near Spirit River on December 2, 2022.

Mounties said they recovered $100,000 worth of scrap copper, a side-by-side, pick-up truck and a gooseneck trailer, all of which were stolen.

Peace River armed robbery, break-in leads to two year jail sentence

Alberta Justice says the accused in an armed robbery and subsequent break-and-enter in Peace River in August of 2023 has been given a two-year jail sentence.

Darcy Lloyd Brett was charged after a robbery on August 10 at a gas station. Some money was stolen.

Peace Regional RCMP said at the time the area was contained so a police dog could be called in.

The suspect said he was hiding in a bush and was arrested after a confrontation with police.

Brett pleaded guilty to charges of robbery, disguised with intent, and resisting a peace officer.

He was also arrested after incidents six days later. RCMP got a report of mischief at a residence, then later got a report that someone had tried to break into a home and had threatened those inside.

Brett pleaded guilty to charges that included assault, break and enter with intent, mischief, and two counts of uttering threats.

He was given 154 days credit for time already spent in custody.

Scrap Metals Act charge withdrawn against Grande Prairie business

A charge of failing to comply with the Scrap Metals Act against a Grande Prairie business has been withdrawn.

H & W Metals & Salvage was charged in November of last year.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time the General Investigations Unit had been working with Criminal Intelligence Service Alberta on a project to prevent metal theft.

An email from the Crown prosecutors office says it is their duty to continually assess all aspects of the evidence.

The office concluded there was no longer a reasonable likelihood of a conviction in this case, so the charge was withdrawn.

Man serving 7.5 year jail sentence after arrests for drugs, weapons, stolen vehicles

A local man is serving a 7.5 year jail sentence after being charged in two separate arrests.

John Wolitski was charged after an arrest on August 12, 2021, after police spotted a man in a vehicle parked at a home around midnight while the man was on curfew conditions.

Police seized several drugs including; fentanyl, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine, along with a loaded handgun and a loaded shotgun.

Wolitski pleaded guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two firearms counts.

On October 11, 2022, Wolitski was one of two men arrested after RCMP found two stolen vehicles at a gas station in Wembley.

Mounties seized methamphetamine during a search of one of the vehicles.

Wolitski pleaded guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, resisting a peace officer, and failure to comply with a release order.

The second man, Dwayne Olson, had pleaded guilty to two charges back in March and was given a total of 195 days in jail.

Wolitski was given a total sentence of 2,730 days in jail. He was given 1,428 days credit for time already spent in custody.

He had trial dates set for November 21 and December 5 but pleaded guilty earlier in 2023.
