ASIRT called in after suspect in hostage-taking shot by police

Grande Prairie RCMP say a woman being held hostage in her home by a man with a gun on Wednesday December 20, led to the suspect being shot by police and both he and the woman held hostage were taken to hospital.

Mounties say they were called out to the dispute at 11:00 a.m. to a home in northwest Grande Prairie. Police say the man had assaulted and injured the woman and fired the gun inside the home.

RCMP were able to contain the area and get inside the home and bring the woman out to bring her to safety.

After Mounties exited the residence, the suspect fired his weapon. Officers shot back, hitting the 42-year-old man.

There is no word at this time on either individual’s conditions and the suspects name was not released by the RCMP.

Grande Prairie Mounties say the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in the investigate police actions. They have also started an internal review.

While this was happening, people in the Summit and Mountview areas were asked to shelter in place. Three nearby schools were placed under hold and secure at that same time.

RCMP say a hold and secure for the community has been lifted and there is no more concern for public safety.
