LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta believes the province is a prime place to shoot movies and TV series, and is taking a new step to promote that.

Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir is set to arrive in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

She said she will meet with executives from HBO and other production agencies to sell Alberta to them.

“Alberta’s government is proud of our talented and growing film and television industry, and we want to keep the momentum going for years to come,” said Fir. “We want producers around the world to know about our competitive financial advantages, breathtaking locations, world-class studios and exceptional crews and talent.”

Fir also plans to co-host an event that aims to showcase Alberta’s film and TV industry to Hollywood producers and studio executives. The event is a collaboration between the Government of Alberta, the Canadian Consulate, Edmonton Screen Industries office, Calgary Economic Development and the Canada Media Fund.

The province has been attracting some major motion pictures in recent years, most prominent of which was HBO’s The Last of Us. The studio spent $141 million filming in Alberta between July 2021 and June 2022. The show and its actors were nominated for a combined 30 Emmy awards.

Fir is scheduled to return to Alberta on Friday.
