Highway twinning to finish this year, work on Highway 40X continues says Minister Dreeshen

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen says the first phase of the Highway 40 twinning project south of Grande Prairie should be done this spring.

“Phase 2, the last phase of that twinning, should be wrapped up in the fall of next year. Highway 40 twinning is coming to a completion.”

Phase 1 is twinning from Grande Prairie to just south of the Wapiti River, while Phase 2 is from there to near the West Fraser plant.

Dreeshen says it is “huge” for the whole province to have this work done.

As for any future twinning, Dreeshen says both traffic counts and the kind of vehicles using the road will determine if any is done.

“We want to make sure that the roads are up to speed (for the) businesses that we have, but also (that) it is safe for the people that live in these regions as well.”

“We want to be able to make sure that we have the infrastructure for that economic growth, but also make sure that people and families can get home at the end of the day.”

Dreeshan says land purchase and engineering work for Highway 40X continues.

He adds it is hard to say when those might be completed.

“The engineering, we’re hoping to be finalized by this year, but it’s always hard to put a timeline on land purchasing.”

“Once it’s all god to go, once we have the right-of-way, we’re expecting to tender it out as soon as possible, then construction to take place right after that.”

Highway 40X will link Highways 40 and 43 around the southwest part of Grande Prairie.
