City Council adopts new recreation and cultural strategy

Jan 31, 2024 | 12:16 PM

After conducting research and a consultation process, City Council is endorsing a new recreation and culture strategy.

The strategy will now guide Council’s planning and decision-making on recreation and culture investments, for the next ten years, such as community facilities, services, and programs.

The development of this strategy started back in 2022, with research and multiple consultations with residents, recreation and culture community groups, youth and stakeholders.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says “[City Council] is thankful for all of the community groups, organizations and residents for their valued input to make this strategy a reality and helping shape the future of recreation in our community for years to come.”

Throughout the research process, five overarching themes were identified by Council, to help support this strategy:

  • Community Capacity – building excellence in the community through physical, social, cultural and economic opportunities to enhance community connections.
  • Equitable Opportunities – ensuring recreation and culture facilities, spaces and services are welcoming and accessible to all.
  • Innovation – incorporating innovative technologies and data to support recreation and culture service delivery.
  • Investment – providing high quality, sustainable, recreation and culture infrastructure in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Community Celebration – focusing on event tourism to highlight the economic and social benefits to the city and region.
