Local sports scores, weekend schedules

NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League playoffs got underway Thursday night with two games.

Spirit River won 4-2 in Grande Prairie. Jean-Marco St. Pierre had two goals for the Rangers, Mike Lefley had a goal and two assists and Justin Todd had two helpers for the Rangers.

Khalin Marsolin had a goal and an assist for the A’s.

Game 2 is set for Saturday in Spirit River.

Also Thursday, Dawson Creek beat visiting Fort St. John 4-1. Garick Gray had a goal and two assists and Wesley Shipton one goal and one assist for the Canucks. Devon Greyeyes had the lone Flyers goal.

Game 2 goes Monday in Fort St. John.

NWJHL

This is the final weekend of the Northwest Junior Hockey League regular season.

There are three games Friday with Sexsmith in Fairview, Wheat Kings visiting Fort St. John and Dawson Creek in Peace River.

Saturday, Fairview at the Wheat Kings and Peace River in Fort St. John, both games start at 8 p.m. Dawson Creek in La Crete starts at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Sexsmith visits the Wheat Kings starting at 2 p.m.

The playoffs start next week with a play-in round between the seventh and eighth-place teams.

NWJHL Playoff Brakcet

Storm

The Storm host Bonnyville Saturday at 6 p.m. and Drayton Valley Sunday at 2 p.m.

Saturday will also be Parent Appreciation Night.

The Storm won their last game Wednesday, 4-3 in Olds.

The Storm have 44 points in 49 games so far this season.

Curling

The Peace Curling Tour continues with the Fort St. John Challenge Spiel Friday through Sunday. Next comes the Peace River Cash Spiel February 23 to 25. The Tour Championship is set for March 8 to 10 in Sexsmith.

Wolves

Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves basketball hosts Ambrose University Friday and Lethbridge College Saturday.

Volleyball visits Ambrose University Friday and Lethbridge College Saturday.

Game times are 6 and 8 p.m. both days.

Indoor track continues Saturday at Concordia.

Free Skating

There is free skating and a Food Drive put on by Cascade Energy at the Design Works Centre Sunday. It will go from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. CDN Controls is hosting free skating February 25. There is also free skating March 3 from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. Skate and helmet rentals are available while supplies last.

Skiing

Nitehawk ski hill is open from 5:30 to 9:30 Friday, 11-5 Saturday and Sunday. The Tube Zone is open from 5-7 and 7:30 to 9:30 Friday, 2-4, 4:30 to 6:30 and 6:45 to 8:45 Saturday and noon-2 and 2:30 to 4:30 Sunday.

Whispering Pines is open Friday through Sunday. Lifts run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The rental shop opens at 9 a.m.

Powder King is open Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9-3, Saturdays and Sundays from 9-3:30.
