Winter holdover fires
Alberta Wildfire asking residents to revisit winter burn sites
Feb 13, 2024 | 8:48 AM
Alberta Wildfire is encouraging residents to revisit their winter burn sites before the start of wildfire season.
With the dry conditions last fall and a lack of moisture in the ground, Alberta Wildfire says there is an increased chance of fires that were lit during the winter continue to burn under the snow and can re-emerge as forest fires in the spring.
Firefighters suggest anyone who did winter burning to spread out the remaining material, soak the area to ensure no more heat is being produced, and continue to check the burn site multiple times leading into spring.
