City council considering enhanced cardiac care for Grande Prairie to its advocacy priority list

Feb 20, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie city council will look at advocating for improved heart health care at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

A presentation from the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation on its fundraising effort for this year at the February 12 meeting prompted council to ask administration to bring a report on advocating for a catheterization laboratory and a cardiac care unit to a future meeting.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says council has been hearing about the need for this.

“Right now, if you were to go get a stent in one of your arteries, we can’t do that in Grande Prairie and so a facility of that magnitude (it) makes sense to have those assets in there so that residents aren’t having to go five hours to get cardiac support.”

“Considering the population that we serve through health care services; I would be confident to say that council will adopt this as a priority.”

Catheterization labs are used for things like putting in pacemakers, angiograms, and angioplasties.

Clayton says the province built the new hospital knowing that it was to serve as a regional facility.

“(There are) expectations of people from High Level and B.C utilizing the facility and so it truly is regional in its nature and its something that will continue to serve quite a large region for sure.”

The date when this will be discussed is not yet known.
