Alberta NDP Leadership candidate says party must “show up” for Alberta

Feb 21, 2024 | 3:48 PM

One of the candidates running to be the new leader of Alberta NDP has made a stop in Grande Prairie.

Edmonton-Glenora, MLA Sarah Hoffman was among those in crowd on Day 1 of he Growing the North Conference at Evergreen Park.

Hoffman says she has several issues she would like to address if elected.

“Health. I used to be the Health Minister and I know how important it is that we have great healthcare right across the province.”

“Another is the impacts of extreme droughts as it, and wildfires, are having a significant impact on economics in the region. And the last one is housing. I think it’s important that we keep housing affordable in communities across our province if we want to support rural sustainability.”

Hoffman served as Minister of Health and Deputy Premier when the NDP formed the provincial government from 2015-2019. She says her history has positioned her to help the NDP connect with Albertans.

“We really showed up for Calgary and Edmonton in the last election,” she says. “We won every seat in Edmonton and the popular vote in Calgary in the majority of seats. It’s time that we show up for the rest of the province too. I definitely have the drive in me, the work ethic. I literally drove up to Grande Prairie to be a part of this conference. That’s not going to change for me. I want to make sure that we’re building right across the province.”

Hoffman says if she is elected, she will work to move Alberta beyond the discussions on a consumer-based carbon tax.

“It lost the national support when Justin Trudeau and the Liberals decided to exempt the east coast from home heating forums,” she says. “But I know people in this region and throughout Alberta care about making sure we have a resilient climate, that people can breathe the air, that we don’t have to pack bags to flee our homes. We need urgent action to address the changing climate. I’m willing to have those tough conversations and to show leadership on that.”
