ASIRT confirms no fault from Grande Prairie RCMP for 2021 death of a person in custody

Feb 28, 2024 | 4:27 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has completed its investigation into the death of a person after being detained by Grande Prairie RCMP.

The investigators have determined the person died from an overdose and no police officers were responsible for the person’s care once he was confined.

The affected person was arrested February 7, 2021, after RCMP were called to the residence he shares with his family and was confirmed to be under the influence of methamphetamine.

The person was detained without incident after refusing to be transported to a hospital or an addiction centre, and was confined for seventeen hours before staff realized he was deceased the next day.

ASIRT’s investigation confirmed civilian guards checked on the person every fifteen minutes but did not enter the cell until 8:50 a.m. when he was found unresponsive and later declared deceased.

Any investigation, if any, into the civilian guards handling of the situation is to be determined by the detachment.
